Vascular calcification (VC) involves hydroxyapatite deposition in the arteries and cardiac muscle. VC is thought to share some outward similarities to skeletal mineralisation and has been associated with the transdifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to an osteoblast-like phenotype.
